Picture of the Great Cardboard Boat Race

This is a new Campus Recreation aquatic event where teams will have 90-minutes to build a canoe out of cardboard, duct tape, and other supplies. They must then paddle their boat across the McAuley Aquatic Center pool (25 yards) with one crew member inside the boat. Come and build a boat, and see if it will float!

Event Information

Date: Friday, August 18, 1-3 p.m.

Check-in: Begins at 1 p.m. on the pool deck of the Campus Recreation Competition Pool

Teams will have 20 minutes to gather supplies, 1 hour to build, and The Great Cardboard Boat Race will begin promptly at 2:30 p.m. Awards will follow.

Registration

Reserve your spot through the Week of Welcome Guidebook App. Spots will open on Friday, August 11.

Eligibility: Georgia Tech students are welcome to participate in this event. Participants will be broken into teams of 8, with a maximum of 10 teams. Students can arrive with a team already set or show up and be placed on a team!

Awards will be given for the following categories:

  • Fastest
  • Most creative

Cardboard Boat Rules & Regulations

  • The Boat must carry 1 adult-size passenger.
  • Boats must be built on site during the allotted timeline. Boat must be made of materials provided at the event; no outside materials are allowed.
  • There are no regulations on boat dimensions
  • Means of Propulsion:
    • 1 oar per team will be provided. Hand paddling is also allowed.
    • Use of feet in the water to kick will result in disqualification.
    • No using the pool edge to propel the boat.
  • The Race:
    • No holding on to other boats causing them to take on water or preventing them from going forward.
    • Any use of lane lines or sides of the pool for pushing or pulling your boat will result in disqualification.
    • The race must begin and end with the person in the boat.
    • All boat crew members must wear a PFD. Campus Rec will supply them.
  • Boats, boat parts, and debris must be disposed of by the team after the event.
